2023-2024 FSL Champion of the Year Award Recipients
Kristen Lafrenière – Walter Murray Collegiate, Saskatoon
Mme. Lafrenière stands out as a teacher in all the best ways. She ensures that class lessons are fun and creative that empower students to find the magic in learning French as a second-language. She creates engaging and fun assignments and activities for her students to explore different aspects of French and Francophone culture and history. One such assignment had her high school students learning about famous French entertainers. The nature of this assignment tapped into the element of universal intrigue that many students felt regarding the tumultuous yet exciting lives of these French icons. One student remarked that this led her to a new wave of French icons and further exploration of French pop culture. Some favourite class activities include “Jeu-di” which take place on Thursdays where students enjoy traditional French-oriented games and “The Passport de Risques” that challenged students to partake in various French-language activities over their school semester. Mme Lafrenière’s kindness, grace, energy, and spirit are wholly memorable and unique.

Cara McDowell – École St. Michael’s School, Yorkton
Mme. McDowell has been a middle-years teacher at École St. Michael’s School in Yorkton for over 15 years. Teaching reading and math to students is one of her passions. She is a leader in the school division for her reading and math groups. Not only do these groups help meet the students where they are academically, but they also develop confidence when reading and doing math in French. Whether it is watching Mme McDowell perform her famous verb dance or participating in one of her French plays, students in her class develop a love for the language. She weaves the love of French into every lesson and activity she does and is always looking for her ways to expose her students to the language. One way that she accomplishes this is through her “Fête de Café” where at the end of each month, the class celebrates their reading achievements. Her students look forward to coming to school everyday where they not only learn French but also have an appreciation for the language. Mme McDowell’s ability to inspire students of all abilities and backgrounds is truly commendable.

Camille Matheson – École St. Paul, Saskatoon
Camille is the office coordinator at École St. Paul. From the second students, parents and staff enter the facility, everyone can sense this is a French immersion school and moreover they embrace the French environment. She makes French fun for the students by interacting with them, by providing daily jokes and riddles (they often use dictionaries independently to solve them), and by supporting them through new words and corrections. Students have never been more confident and enthusiastic to learn French and proudly and authentically use the language. Her commitment to fostering a French environment at school in the hallways and in the office helped to push classroom teachers to do the same in their classrooms. If this is not enough, she also organizes a “Poisson du mois” program where students who are “caught” speaking French are entered in a draw to win a prize. She is a true champion of French as a second-language.
